Ideas of Noise Festival @ Vivid Projects, 2018
Discrete continuity (a 2-dimensional space-filling exercise)
spray paint on paper
10 x 1.5m
Ideas of Noise Festival commissioned this piece for my artist-in-residency with them in August 2018. The festival happened in Birmingham over several venues (this part was in Vivid Projects).
The title is a reference to the work of Antoine Beuger (Dutch composer and founding figure of the Wandelweiser group/movement), who borrowed the phrase “discrete continuity” from his poet friend Oswald Egger. Beuger’s piece 'silent harmonies in discrete continuity' was written for Marcia Hafif, an American monochrome painter, and - reciprocally across the borders between artistic disciplines - my picture was created with the composer in mind.
still waters are said to run deep,
but in reality it is the imperturbability of their surface
that impresses us.
